The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment
The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) resulted from the recognition that there was a need to improve the way in which the output of scientific research is evaluated. As signatories to DORA, the Tri-Agencies are committed to ensuring a wide range of research results and outputs are valued in the review process.

Tri-Agency Narrative CV
In response to DORA, the Tri-Agency Narrative CV (TCV) was designed by the federal granting agencies (CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC) to better capture the diverse contributions of grant/award applicants. The Narrative CV allows researchers to showcase their unique contributions, while also advancing EDI and excellence in research.
Some advantages include the ability of applicants to flexibly demonstrate their research narrative, the valuing of diverse research outputs, and the ability to include detailed descriptions of career trajectories and mentorship roles.
The Tri-Agency CV includes three sections:
- Personal statement;
- Most significant contributions and experiences; and
- Supervisory and mentorship activities.
Tips for preparing an effective Tri-Agency CV
- Start early! The TCV can take some time to prepare so allow adequate time before the application deadline.
- The TCV is project specific, so ensure that all contributions described are applicable and relevant to the proposed project.
- Describe your most relevant and impactful contributions related to the proposed project over your entire career (there is no time limit for the inclusion of contributions).
- Provide evidence and use examples to support the statements in your TCV.
- Include less traditionally recognized contributions where applicable, such as community engagement or outreach activities.
- Write in the first person.
- The TCV must be self-contained, so ensure that all relevant information is fully included within the text of the TCV.
- Read the instructions each time you prepare a TCV as requirements may change with time.
- Note that the formatting requirements vary by agency. Use the correct template provided by the agency to which you are applying.
