The staff and faculty of the NMP are very proud of this
program. As one of three distributed medical education sites of UBC’s Faculty
of Medicine, the Northern Medical Program has seen many accomplishments over
the past seven years.
Our small class sizes of 32 students per year provides an
intimate learning environment where students are well supported by the staff,
faculty and medical communities throughout the north. Our classes are made up
of diverse groups of individuals from a variety of backgrounds and life
experiences who bring with them their unique perspectives which I believe
further enhances the learning experience. Opportunities to learn during
clinical clerkship years are formally established in both the northwest and
northeast of the Province in the communities of Fort St John and Terrace,
providing even more experience in rural medical training.
Along with successfully delivering medical education in the
northern half of the Province of British Columbia, we have established a very
solid research platform in basic science, social science and clinical research
with impressive collaborations provincially, national and
internationally. We encourage medical student involvement in our research
activities and strive to provide opportunities for students to broaden their
understanding and gain experience in these areas. The research success of our
faculty is evidenced by the over 2.5 million dollars awarded to Northern
Medical Program faculty.
To date there have been four graduating classes of the NMP.
These graduates have been very successful in their residency matches with over
fifty percent choosing to pursue careers in Family Medicine. This is far above
the national average and resulted in the program being recognized with an award
by the Association of Rural Physicians of Canada. Our students and graduates
are very positive about their learning experiences in the program and remain
grateful for the opportunities to learn from such committed and supportive
health care providers and program faculty. We remain grateful for the support of
the physicians, donors, leaders, health care providers, faculty and staff and we
look to the future with confidence in the continued success of this program.
