Environmental Engineering @ UNBC

Joint UNBC/UBC Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Environmental Engineering

The UNBC/UBC Environmental Engineering Program is an unique, four and a half year joint degree offered collaboratively between the University of Northern British Columbia and the University of British Columbia. The program combines our respective strengths in environmental science and engineering to offer students a flexible, distinctive educational experience perfectly matched with the immediate marketplace need of BC's leading industries. Graduates of the Environmental Engineering program will be in demand for their technical expertise, hands-on problem solving skills, and unparalleled understanding of environmental issues and problems.

In their first two years, students develop a foundation in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and environmental science, through study within the College of Science and Management at UNBC. In their third and fourth years, students transfer to UBC where they gain a thorough, hands-on understanding of engineering fundamentals, analysis and design, primarily through courses in Civil Engineering and Chemical and Biological Engineering. Students complete their degree with a final term at UNBC where they focus on practical environmental engineering design problems.

Some of the things Environmental Engineering students learn about include:
  • Fundamental science underlying engineering and the environment;
  • Function, process and interactions of the major environmental systems: air, land, water, and living;
  • Fundamental concepts of heat, mass transport, fluid dynamics and process flowsheeting;
  • Flow of water and dispersion of pollutants in surface water and groundwater;
  • Industrial pollution prevention/control ;
  • Design of waste water and air pollution control technologies;
  • Common industrial process design;
  • Hands-on training in wastewater analysis and treatment;
  • Geo-environmental and mining environmental engineering.

Upon graduation, students receive a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree in Environmental Engineering from both UNBC and UBC. The program is designed to meet accreditation criteria of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia. The program has been accreditated in 2007, and our graduates are eligible for registration as Professional Engineers (P.Eng.) and have access to great career opportunities.
