Biography

Dr. Nathan Lachowsky (he, him, his) is a settler researcher of Ukrainian and English descent. He is Dean of the Faculty of Human and Health Sciences at the University of Northern British Columbia and a Professor in the School of Health Sciences.

Previously, he was Associate Dean Research for the Faculty of Human and Social Development at the University of Victoria (UVic) and a Professor in their School of Public Health and Social Policy. He is a former Michael Smith Health Research BC Scholar and was Interim Director of the University of Victoria’s multidisciplinary Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health. He served as Special Advisor Health Research for two years to the Vice President Research and Innovation, responsible for advancing the UVic Health Initiative.

Dr. Lachowsky consistently brings strategic thinking and clear mandates and vision to the many leadership roles he fulfills. His service has been much more than fulfilling necessary roles and responsibilities, and he focuses on increasing the capacity for others to thrive in research, teaching and service. He has a collegial reputation and is known for getting things done through collaboration.

He completed a PhD in epidemiology from the University of Guelph during which he was a CIHR Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar and Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar for his dissertation research in Aotearoa New Zealand. Afterwards, he completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in population health with the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and University of British Columbia. He also completed postdoctoral fellowship training through an Ontario HIV Treatment Network Junior Investigator Development Award at the University of Toronto’s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work.

Research and Expertise

Championing interdisciplinary and community-based approaches, Nathan’s research informs public health practice, health services, and policy. He conducts interdisciplinary research within a social justice framework in order to achieve health equity for marginalized communities. He has extensive experience building relationships with community-based organizations, health systems, and government partners. He is a noteworthy research ambassador and public scholar.
