What essential documents should I carry when traveling to Canada? 

Ensure you have your valid passport, visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), Letter of Acceptance and Provincial Attestation Letter (if required) from UNBC, and any other documents specified by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). What steps should I take before departing for Canada? 

Before travelling to Canada, make sure you’ve: 

  • Obtain a Port of Entry Letter of Introduction (You’ll receive this once your study permit application has been approved.) 
  • Valid Passport and TRV/eTA 
  • Registered for courses 
  • Arranged housing accommodations 
  • Reviewed your health insurance coverage 
  • Submit Arrival Form to the International Office (We’ll provide this a few weeks before the start of the semester.)

What should I pack for my stay in Prince George? 

Prince George experiences a range of weather conditions. Pack warm clothing for winter months, including insulated jackets, gloves, and boots, as temperatures can drop significantly. For other seasons, layering is key due to variable weather. 

How do I get to UNBC from the Prince George Airport? 

Taxi services can be found waiting outside the terminal for all arriving flights.

Can I arrive early in Prince George? 

Yes, you may arrive early, but ensure your accommodation is available before the travel. Students moving into UNBC Residence can find their approved move-in dates in their Residence confirmation email. If you’re arriving earlier, you’ll need to arrange temporary accommodation off campus.  

What happens if my study permit is refused or denied? 

Depending on your situation, you may reapply for a study permit, defer your admission date to a future semester, or request for a refund. Please contact ie@unbc.ca immediately. We will be able to explore your options with you. 

What should I do if my visa or permit is delayed? 

If there are delays, notify International Office at ie@unbc.ca immediately. 

Can I work while studying at UNBC? 

International students with a valid study permit may be eligible to work on or off-campus under certain conditions. Ensure you understand the regulations before seeking employment. Review UNBC International – Working in Canada page. 

When can I apply to live in Residence? 

The housing application for the September and Academic Year semesters usually opens in mid-February, with a deadline of July 1st. Check UNBC Housing and Residence Life page for updated information. 

What housing options are available for international students? 

UNBC offers on-campus residence housing option. Detailed information is available on the UNBC Housing and Residence Life pages. 

Who is eligible to live in Residence, and who gets priority? 

Any UNBC student aged 17 or older by the end of their first semester and registered in at least one UNBC course is eligible. Priority is given to first-year, Aboriginal, and Former Youth in Care students who apply before their respective housing guarantee deadlines.

Can I arrive before my move-in date? 

Students need to ensure that they have accommodation if they arrive before the move-in date.  

Is there an option for meal-plan? 

UNBC Meal Plan is mandatory for all first-year students and other students with fewer than 60 credit hours living at the UNBC Residence.  

Graduate students and students with more than 60 UNBC credit hours can purchase a Meal Plan or Meal Deal, but it is not mandatory.   

Can I defer to the next semester? 

Undergraduate deferral requests are only granted for general entry programs (BA, BSc, BComm, and BPI). Review the Deferrals, Refunds and Withdrawals page for more information.

How do I activate my student account? 

After receiving your UNBC acceptance letter, you will be provided with instructions to activate your myUNBC account. This account is essential for accessing university services, including course registration and email communications. 

When should I register for my courses? (Undergraduate) 

Course schedules for the September and January semesters are typically open for viewing early May and registration will open mid-May. Courses for the May semester is available in March. It’s advisable to register promptly, as classes can fill up quickly. Log in to your myUNBC Student Account to view the courses. 

How many courses should I register for? (Undergraduate Studies) 

Most students take 3-4 courses depending on the amount of workload you are comfortable with. At UNBC, full-time studies consist of taking at least 9 credit hours (3 courses).

How do I declare or change my major? 

To declare your major, contact your Student Advisor and submit the necessary forms available from the Office of the Registrar

Can I change my program/major? (General Entry Program) 

Before the semester starts: You may request a program change by contacting your Admissions Officer. Please note that we may recommend not changing your program/major until you received your study permit. Contact ie@unbc.ca for questions. 

When semester has started: You may request a program change through the Office of the Registrar, subject to approval. It’s best to consult your Academic Advisor before submitting a request. 

What resources are available for academic support? 

UNBC offers various academic support services, including tutoring, writing assistance, and workshops to enhance study skills. The Academic Success Centre is a valuable resource for students seeking additional help.

When do I need to pay my tuition and fees? 

Tuition and fees are due by the first day of the semester. Check UNBC Dates and Deadlines page for exact dates.  

How do I pay my tuition and fees?

How do I apply for awards and scholarships? 

Applications are made through your myUNBC Student account by navigating to the ‘Awards and Financial Aid’ section. Ensure all sections are completed, and any supporting documentation is submitted by the specified deadlines. 

Do I need to be registered full-time to receive my awards? 

Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 9 credit hours per semester (3 courses) to qualify for most awards, unless otherwise stated.  

Do I need health insurance while studying at UNBC? 

Yes. All international students must have health insurance. New students are automatically enrolled in private temporary plan (GuardMe) for their first four months in Canada.  

What is the difference between GuardMe, MSP, and UNBC extended health coverage? 

GuardMe: Temporary private coverage for your first four months. 

MSP (Medical Services Plan): BC’s public health insurance that covers extra services after you’ve lived for three months.  

NUGSS Extended Health: Student union-provided insurance that covers extra services (dental, vision, prescription).

Is there a specific orientation for international students? 

UNBC organizes an International Student Orientation to help you adjust to the university environment, understand study permit requirements, and connect with support services. Details about the orientation schedule will be sent to you few weeks before the semester starts.  

How can I get involved in campus activities? 

Engaging in student organizations, attending events, and participating in workshops are excellent ways to immerse yourself in the campus community and make new connections. Peer to peer mentorship, 

Are there resources to help with cultural adjustment? 

UNBC’s International Office offers Peer to Peer Mentorship program where returning students help new students adjust to university life and life in Prince George. New students will learn about study tips, services available on campus, what to do in the community and make new friends.

I want to improve my English – is there English Language support at UNBC? 

The International Office offers free English conversation sessions to new and existing international students, both undergraduate and graduate.

Where do I get my ID Card, Library Card, and U-Pass? 

After paying all tuition and fees for the semester, you can obtain your ID card from the Cashier’s Office, which also serves as your library card. For U-Pass information, refer to the U-Pass and Municipal Recreation Fees section. 

How do I access medical services on campus? 

UNBC provides health services through its Medical Clinic, offering a range of healthcare support to students.  

How do I get my gym pass? 

After paying your tuition and fees, visit the Northern Sports Centre’s front counter staff for assistance in obtaining your gym pass. 

What is a SIN number? 

Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a unique 9-digit number issued by the Canadian government that you need to work in Canada and to access certain government programs and benefits.

How do I obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN)? 

The International Office hosts a "Apply for your Social Insurance Number Clinic" every first week of the semester. This service is provided by Service Canada. You can also apply for it online or at a Service Canada office after arriving.

Are there grocery stores, restaurants, or places of worship in Prince George? 

Prince George has variety of grocery stores with varieties of international products as well as restaurants, cafes, and religious centers representing different faiths. Transition is accessible via bus or car. 

What transportation options are available in Prince George? 

Prince George offers public transit services, including buses that connect the university to various parts of the city. Additionally, taxis and ride-sharing services are available. 

How can I set up a bank account in Prince George? 

To manage your finances efficiently, consider opening a local bank account upon arrival. Major banks in Prince George offer services suitable for students. 

What are my options for mobile phone services? 

Several mobile service providers operate in Prince George, offering various plans. It’s advisable to compare options to find one that best suits your communication needs.
