Conservation Psychology
  • factors that motivated conservation
  • barriers to conservation
  • values, attitudes and behaviours associated with the environment
  • environmental conflict and conflict resolution
Subjective Well-Being, Coping, and the Self
  • life satisfaction – measurement & link to conservation
  • healthy and harmful self-esteem
  • responses to stressful events, coping and well-being

The focus of my research at present is investigating the factors that motivated individuals to increase their conservation behaviour. One line of investigation involves identifying behaviours that both improve people’s life satisfaction and decrease people’s focus on material consumption.

My recent research work on self-esteem involves investigating the stability of people’s feelings of self-worth in response to daily negative and positive events and examining how unstable self-esteem is linked to defensiveness, egotism and emotional problems.

Dr. William J. Tippett, Assistant Professor
B.A. (Trent University)
M.Sc. (University of Essex)
Ph.D. (York University)

Office: TLC 10-3552
Tel: (250) 960-6504
Fax: (250) 960-5744

Research interests: My research interest involves exploring the use of a non-invasive psychophysical testing procedure to detect cognitive decline in individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease and cerebrovascular disease. To assist in this evaluation I examine the relationship between visuomotor ability, cognitive variables and brain changes observable using modern neuroimaging methods.  In addition, I conduct research examining the ability of post stroke individuals to produce effective visually guided movements. Specifically, I am examining lesions predominantly within the right hemisphere as identified through neuroradiological findings. The examination of individuals with focal lesions may provide insight into the brain behaviour correlates utilized in visuospatial performance. Furthermore, this procedure can indicate whether individuals that are significantly beyond a stroke episode have developed compensatory abilities to complete certain tasks.

Dr. Tippett will be accepting graduate students in the 2011-2012 academic year.
