UNBC President Charles Jago to Receive Order of Canada
UNBC President Dr. Charles Jago will be formally
named a Member of the Order of Canada for his contribution to education
over the past 25 years. He is one of 82 new appointments announced by
Governor General Adrienne Clarkson.
“I am very humbled by this honour,” says Dr. Jago, “and recognize that
my achievement has much to do with the talented and dedicated people I
have worked with over my career, and especially for the support and
encouragement of my wife, Mary.”
During his ten-year tenure at UNBC, Dr. Jago has overseen significant
growth and development of the University, including campus expansion,
research infrastructure, new degree programs, and the creation of the
Northern Medical Program. He has worked extensively on northern
economic development and helped to foster major educational initiatives
with First Nations groups throughout northern BC.
Dr. Jago graduated from the University of Cambridge with a PhD in
History in 1969. He went on to become a full professor at McMaster
University, and then served as Principal of Huron College for eight
years before coming to UNBC.
In addition to his membership on a number of university boards and
councils, Dr. Jago is involved in several local and regional
organizations, including Theatre Northwest, The Two Rivers Art Gallery,
and the Northern BC United Way, which he chaired in 2004. He is also a
member of the Board of Directors for Initiatives Prince George and for
Partnerships BC Inc.
The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding
achievement and service in various fields of human endeavour. It is
Canada’s highest honour for lifetime achievement. The only other Prince
George resident to ever be named as a Member of the Order of Canada is
conservationist Tommy Tompkins, who received the award in 1974. Native
leader Mary John of Vanderhoof was also named to the Order in 1996.
Dr. Jago will retire in July next year. The search process for the next UNBC president is currently underway.
