UNBC Explores Mba Program
December 3, 2003 For Immediate
Release
UNBC is exploring the possibility of launching a Master's of Business
Administration (MBA) program - possibly within a year - after studying
its feasibility and surveying prospective students over the summer.
In an attempt to quantify support for a UNBC MBA, the University's School
of Business surveyed 17 local/regional employers, a dozen recent MBA graduates,
and nearly 150 prospective students who responded to an online survey.
Other MBA programs at universities in western Canada were also analyzed.
"Overall, respondents were interested in a program that would accommodate
part-time study, some face-to-face courses supplemented by an online component,
and requirements that recognize full-time working managers," says
Business professor Charles Schell. "Our work shows that there is
a market in northern BC for an MBA - one that would enhance the skills
of managers in a variety of occupations, while recognizing the particular
needs of northerners."
MBA programs are designed to improve business knowledge and strategic
thinking to students who are interested in broadening their management
skills. The cost for an MBA program in Canada can be as high as $70,000.
"The employers see two major strengths of a UNBC MBA program,"
says professor Schell. "First, they recognize the need for further
education to enhance strategic thinking and train those employees who
will replace retiring senior managers. Second, many corporations in northern
BC strongly support UNBC and its focus on the needs of northern communities."
In the months ahead, the School of Business will refine the curriculum
plan and cost for the proposed MBA, before seeking support from the University's
Senate and Board of Governors. Further details about the proposed program
will likely be available in the spring. The first courses may begin by
the late summer of 2004.
