A person with exceptional connections within both the Northwest region and UNBC will be the University's new lead administrator in the region.
Judith Lapadat
will begin her new position as Regional Chair of the Northwest
region in July, 2004, after completing teaching obligations with UNBC's
Education program. Dr Lapadat has been with UNBC for 10 years and has
extensive experience planning and delivering regional courses.
She also has a long history in the region. The Lapadat family was a pioneer
family in the Bulkley Valley and Judith was born and raised in Smithers.
She has spent time in most of the region's communities, living in Prince
Rupert for a year during the 1970s.
"I feel a really deep connection to this part of BC, and I'm eager
to begin my new job as a visible local face for UNBC," says Dr Lapadat.
"I'm a big believer in the region and a big believer in the role
UNBC can play to expand educational opportunities and disseminate relevant
research and information. It will be important for me to support the programs
already underway in the region, such as the partnership with Wilp Wilxo'oskwhl
Nisga'a, language courses in Hazelton, and the Social Work and Education
cohorts currently pursuing their studies. I'm also interested in expanding
our presence, and looking at opportunities in Nursing, Social Work, and
Education, as well as initiating courses in under-served communities."
Dr Lapadat has bachelor's and master's degree from UBC and a PhD in Education
from Simon Fraser University. She is also an artist and published poet.
In Terrace, she replaces Dr Leslie King, who is now with the University
of Manitoba.
A reception to acknowledge Dr Lapadat's appointment will be held at noon
on Wednesday, November 26, in UNBC's Terrace campus at 4741 Park Avenue.
Dr Lapadat will be introduced by Dennis Macknak, UNBC Director of Regional
Operations.
