MBB: Timberwolves split with WolfPack

Prince George, BC - Josh Wolfram led the Thompson River University WolfPack to an 81-71 win over the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday night at the Northern Sport Centre. The WolfPack move to 7-5, while the Timberwolves fall to 5-7 on the season.

Fourth year forward Josh Wolfram (Kamloops, BC) was instrumental in the TRU WolfPack's victory over the Timberwolves. Starting strong Wolfram netted 11 points in the first quarter alone and continued to battle in the key throughout the second half, finishing with 29 points and 16 rebounds. Gerard Gore (St.John's, ANT) chipped in 10 points to the WolfPack's total.

Devin McMurtry (Surrey, BC) led the Timberwolves with a double-double, 18 points and 14 rebounds. Fourth year guard Billy Cheng (Richmond, BC) chipped in 12 points and three assists.

Wolfram came out hot in the first half, forcing the Timberwolves to play catch-up. From the get-go the TRU WolfPack played with pace and urgency. Shooting 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc the WolfPack put the Timberwolves under pressure. McMurtry and Cheng relieved some the pressure but at the half the Timberwolves trailed 41-30.

The third quarter was the most successful for the Twolves, outscoring the WolfPack 20-17. Halfway through the quarter the Timberwolves trailed by 16 but were able to battle back and close the gap to only eight points before the start of the fourth.

In the final ten minutes the WolfPack kept up the pace, pushing the Timberwolves to catch up. Wolfram pulled in five defensive boards in the final ten minutes giving TRU the possessions they needed to stay ahead of the Twolves. In the end the WolfPack were able to come away with an 81-71 victory over the Timberwolves.

The Thompson River University WolfPack return home next weekend to host the MacEwan Griffins, while the UNBC Timberwolves travel to Calgary to take on the Mount Royal Cougars.
