Timberwolves record first ever weekend sweep

Ty Venhola

Prince George, BC - UNBC Timberwolves men's soccer team takes their first ever two game weekend against the Trinity Western Spartans. The Timberwolves followed up Saturday's win with a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans drop to 3-4-1 while the Timberwolves advance to 3-7 in conference play.

A constant drizzle kept the field soggy and wet during the Timberwolves and Spartans rematch Sunday afternoon. Both teams were plagued by the wet conditions and struggled on numerous occasions to find their footing. Even in less than ideal weather both Trinity Western and UNBC managed to create multiple scoring opportunities for their sides, with neither being able to convert their attack into points during the first half. The 0-0 scoreline carried throughout the majority of the game.

Second half substitution Eric Dove (Port Moody, BC) added the pace you would expect from fresh of the legs of the bench, within the first 10 minutes of being on the field Dove was able to get off three dangerous looking shots, forcing Timberwolves keeper Ty Venhola (Abbotsford, BC) under pressure.

In the 58th minute the Spartans advanced the ball finding Dove at the top left corner of the box, he stepped around the defender and fired a shot but was blocked by Venhola, the rebound was then kicked away from by the Timberwolves back line.

The Timberwolves added their own scoring opportunity in the 64th minute after a Spartans corner kick was knocked up field by Connor Noftle (Chilliwack, BC). Noftle passed the ball up to Brandon Wallace (Chilliwack, BC) who maintained possession. The Timberwolves worked the ball around until Francesco Bartolillo (Calgary, AB) found himself open for a shot but was denied by the Spartans keeper.

The 72nd minute kept Timberwolves' fans on the edge of their seat when Dove carried the ball from the right side right in front of the net and let loose only to be shut down by a diving save from Venhola. Again in the 75th minute it looked like the Timberwolves were going to make it on the board. Noftle look the ball down to the left side of the box near the end line, an on target cross put the ball into the box and right to Wallace whose attempt at a bicycle kick sailed just wide of the left post.

A Spartans foul set the Timberwolves up with a free kick in the 85th minute. Bartolillo let fly  but with the Timberwolves' players crowding the box the Spartans keeper was forced to wait to see if UNBC was going to try and get a touch on the ball. The Timberwolves left the ball freezing the keeper as Bartolillo's free kick went sailing into the back of the net, giving the Timberwolves a 1-0 advantage with minutes left to play.

The Spartans turned up the pace of the game for the remaining time, looking for one of their many scoring opportunities to drop. A handball in the 89th minute awarded the Spartans their own free kick but the shot was saved by Venhola. Then again in the 90th minute a header attempt by Dominic Reinold (Wesseling, Germany) went wide of the net. At the final whistle the Timberwolves held on to their 1-0 lead for their second win of the weekend.

The Trinity Western Spartans continue their Canada West campaign next weekend when they host the University of Victoria Vikes and the UBC Thunderbirds Friday and Saturday.

The UNBC Timberwolves finish off the regular season in Kamloops next weekend with  double header against the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack October 10-11.
