Prince George, BC - Nationally ranked Trinity Western Spartans swept the UNBC Timberwolves in their two game weekend matchup. The Spartans defeated the Timberwolves 4-1 and improve to 7-0-1 on the season while the Timberwolves drop to 0-8-2 after Sunday's game.

While the Timberwolves opened strong the Spartans quickly took control of the game. Their first goal came in the 19th minute. Forward Krista Gommeringer (Calgary, AB) played a cross to Amy Gartke (Edmonton, AB) low on the left side of the field, Gartke then crossed the ball into the box for Jenna Di Nunzio (North Delta, BC). A quick turn and shot put the ball into the back of the net and put the Spartans on the board 1-0.

The Timberwolves continued their battle, working the ball up field in an attempt to put striker Sidney Roy (Burnby, BC) into space. Roy found her space in the 44th minute, a through ball from Jessica Erickson (Prince George, BC) sent Roy up field. The third year striker carried the ball down the side line using a change of pace to shake her defender, giving her enough room to get a shot off. Roy knocked the ball over top of the Spartans keeper just under the crossbar, tying the game 1-1 just before the halftime whistle.

The Spartans regained control in the second half netting three more goals before the final whistle. The first came in the 49th from Gommeringer who sent a long ball across the box and into the net just inside of the far post. With a 2-1 lead the Spartans continued to put pressure on the Timberwolves which paid off in the 61st minute. Di Nunzio sent the ball to the feet of Isabella Di Trocchio (Burnaby, BC) who was able to find the back of the net from the top of the box.

A few close calls from the Timberwolves were enough to keep the Spartans defence on their toes but they were unable to score again before the end of the game. The Spartans closed off the game with their final and fourth goal in the 88th minute. A corner from Di Trocchio was deflected by the Timberwolves keeper only to be put back for a shot, rebounded and put back again by Kristen Santema (Coquitlam, BC). At the end of 90 minutes the Spartans prevailed 4-1 over the Timberwolves.

The Trinity Western Spartans continue their Canada West campaign Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11 when they host the University of Victoria Vikes and the UBC Thunderbirds.

The UNBC Timberwolves cap off their 2014 season in Kamloops next weekend. The Timberwolves will take on the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack in a double header October 10-11.
