First annual men's soccer alumni game a success

Alumni and current men's soccer players

Prince George, BC - The weather held out for the first annual UNBC men's soccer alumni game. 18 alumni were present and participated in the friendly Saturday afternoon at the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League fields.

The event was the brain child of alumnus Andrew Seabrook. Seabrook finished his degree but still maintained a single year of eligibility. When the Timberwolves made their move from the college league to Canada West Seabrook returned for one last season in order to help the Timberwolves transition to playing CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) level soccer. For Seabrook the idea behind the alumni game was to keep the current players connected to those who built the program as well as act as a reunion for the alumni returning for the weekend to play.

"Varsity athletes who have now become UNBC Alumni are potentially among the greastest advocates for UNBC. They have worn the jersey, the university colours, and have their degree as well; they have invested a lot," said Seabrook. "It is also a great opportunity for the fans to get a look at the current team prior to the regular season starting."

Even though the weekend was set up to help alumni connect with each other, and current players connect with the alumni there was also a job to be done. At 2:00 p.m. the current UNBC Timberwolves squad kicked off against the alumni team. Those in attendance were treated to a glimpse of things to come. Rookie forward Conrad Rowlands (Chilliwack, BC) made his first appearance in a Timberwolves' jersey stand out by netting two goals in the first half. Third year striker Cheona Edzerza (Prince George, BC) and first year Brandon Wallce (Chilliwack, BC) each scored once rounding out the final at 4-0 for the current UNBC Timberwolves.

The men's soccer team will continue their preseason schedule with a trip to Alberta starting on Wednesday, August 20 when they take on the MacEwan University Griffins.
