Web solutions for academic websites and online forms

Drupal

OpenETC

OpenETC is an open-source web hosting platform developed specifically for students and educators. This platform is used to present academic content for courses, projects, and research, and is supported by the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology.

Although we host several website sections for faculty on the UNBC website, we wanted to encourage all faculty and students to consider using OpenETC for your next web project. Some of the benefits of hosting web content on OpenETC vs. using the UNBC website are as follows:

  • Receive your own domain name (e.g., Dr. Ho Younghusband's domain name is hoyounghusband.opened.ca).
  • Have more autonomy over how your web content is organized and when it is published without the need for support from the web team.
  • Choose from a wide range of customizable templates for your own look and feel.
  • Choose the content management system that best suits your needs; WordPress or Mattermost.
  • If you leave UNBC or retire, you can keep your OpenETC website.

For more information on how to get started with using OpenETC, please contact the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology.

Microsoft Office Forms

The UNBC website currently hosts dozens of fillable online forms. Another option is available to employees who want to target an internal audience or who need added functionality. Please consider using Microsoft Office Forms to host your online form rather than using the UNBC website. Here are some of the benefits to using Office Forms vs. a form on the UNBC website:

  • Create and maintain your own form without having to contact the web team for support or updates.
  • Control when your form is available using the start and finish settings.
  • Choose from a large selection of templates to customize the style of your form.
  • Track all the responses within your form as they are submitted.
  • Restrict access to your form to only people who have a UNBC account.
  • Choose to receive an email notification each time your form is submitted.
  • If your form requires a series approvals, you can use Office Forms in conjunction with Power Automate to create a workflow that processes your form for signing from multiple parties.

For support with Microsoft Office Forms or Power Automate, please contact IT Support at support@unbc.ca.
