Think you got what it takes to be Sustainable? Then participate in the UNBC Sustainability Challenge, a year-long opt-in program developed by faculty in collaboration with UNBC Sustainability. This initiative will be hosted on Moodle, allowing students to participate and earn rewards or prizes (tuition waiver, gift cards, dinner with the Facilities Director to pitch your idea!). 

UNBC Sustainability Challenge Winners

Jo Van Winkle

Jo Van Winkle (they/them) is the winner of the inaugural 2024/2025 UNBC Sustainability Challenge. A fourth-year Environmental Health student in the Faculty of Human and Health Sciences, Jo completed the most challenges, showcasing their strong commitment to sustainability.

Challenges Completed:

Category: Individual Behaviour

  1. Green Residence Checklist - Completed the checklist and committed to sustainable behaviours at their home
  2. Green Commuting - Carpooled with a roommate to the University
  3. Participating in a Community or UNBC Event - Attended the G-Force meeting on September 21 and got to see the Compost Room
  4. Supporting Local Food Security - buy local, forage, or grow your own - Jo grew a bunch of squash in their garden including Kobucha, Spaghetti, and a small red kuri squash

  1. Enjoy Nature on a Local Trail - went for a walk at Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park
  2. Act of Kindness - Donated her excess home-grown produce to friends
  3. Frugal and Meaningful Gifts - Created a homemade birthday card using supplies around the house and huckleberry rhubarb jam made from berries they picked
  4. Be Resourceful - At Col Juicery where they worked, they repurpose the giant tubs of peanut butter into compost bins rather than recycle them
  5. Acts of Service - volunteered to help prepare the hydroponics towers for planting
  6. Teach Sustainability - They have shown a handful of their friends where the Recycle Room is on Campus and how to recycle properly at UNBC
