Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger

Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger

UNBC has taken a number of actions at the local and community level to ensure support for the goal of Zero Hunger. Whether its donating and maintaining a food bank for students or working towards policies which would see zero food waste on campus or feeding students through our First Nations Centre, the University is working at the local level to ensure that students, staff, and faculty have access to nutritious food. Our researchers are actively engaged in projects to ensure food security throughout northern B.C. and with collaborators around the world to address issues of food scarcity, along with engaging in research which addresses the need for bio-degradable and targeted pest control and strengthening agricultural soil.

NUGSS Food Bank

NUGSS provides a food bank to help improve food security for the entire UNBC community. The NUGSS Food Bank is located at the NUGSS office in room 6-370 and is available during regular office hours.

Free catered food from UNBC

UNBC sometimes hosts catered events where not all the food served gets eaten. Check out the UNBC Free Food Facebook page or UNBC Sustainability on Instagram to get notifications when free food is available on campus.

UNBC Research Strengthens Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture

Dr. Emmanuel Chilanga’s research examines how rapid urbanization in African cities, such as in Malawi, shapes food access, youth employment, and vulnerability in informal settlements. Through the Mapping African Urban Foodscapes project, his work highlights the social and spatial inequalities that limit access to affordable, nutritious food—particularly for young people living in restricted food zones.

To address these challenges, Chilanga promotes agroecology and community-based food systems, encouraging composting instead of chemical fertilizers and establishing collective urban garden zones rather than relying on individual efforts. His collaboration with UNBC’s campus composting and sustainability programs connects local and global learning, showing how youth engagement and organic food practices can transform unhealthy diets into sustainable, healthy food cultures.

UNBC strengthens community food security through local food systems research

UNBC’s Dr. David Connell studies how local food systems and agricultural land-use planning support community well-being and economic resilience. His long-running partnerships with the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets measure the economic and social benefits of farmers’ markets across the province—evidence that these markets generate local income for vendors, create entry-level opportunities, and improve access to fresh, affordable food for households. Connell’s work also informs agricultural land-use policies to protect farmland and sustain regional food supply, key levers for reducing vulnerability to food insecurity in northern communities.
