Reflections of new graduates

"If I were given the opportunity to re-do my undergrad, I would pick UNBC every time."

"I graduated in 2024 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from UNBC. I was drawn to economics because of my interest in the ways climate change and economic systems intersect. I wanted to better understand how regional economies could adapt to evolving global demands through policy, innovation, and sustainable development. UNBC’s reputation as Canada’s Green University and its wide range of environmentally focused courses made it the perfect fit for me.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at UNBC was the community—especially the relationships I built with both my professors and classmates. The small class sizes created a supportive environment where I felt comfortable asking questions, exploring new ideas, and truly engaging with the material. My professors were approachable, patient, and always willing to go the extra mile. Their mentorship played a significant role in shaping my academic interests and pushing me to grow.

Beyond economics, I developed critical communication and teamwork skills that have been just as valuable in my career. Whether it was through group projects, presentations, or class discussions, I learned how to clearly express ideas, listen actively, and collaborate effectively. These interpersonal skills have continued to serve me well in both professional and personal settings.

I’m now working as a pilot in the Canadian Armed Forces. Although it may not be a traditional path for an economics graduate, the skills I gained, particularly in analysis, decision-making, and systems thinking, are incredibly relevant to what I do every day. Managing resources in the air, assessing risk, and making high-pressure decisions all require the kind of structured thinking that economics taught me.

Looking back, I can confidently say that my degree shaped both who I am and where I’m headed. If I were given the opportunity to re-do my undergraduate degree, I would pick UNBC every time."
