Associate Vice-President Dr. Paul Winwood

Dr. Paul WinwoodWelcome from Dr. Winwood

Welcome to the Division of Medical Sciences!  We live, work and train our students on the traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh, part of the Dakelh (Carrier) First Nations, and also, through our clinical training placements, on traditional territories throughout the north that are home to numerous First Nations and other Indigenous communities.

The goal of our Division’s medical and health profession programs is to provide local education opportunities for people from the North and to train health professionals who have the skills and aptitude to work in northern, rural and Indigenous communities. Our programs also provide valuable insights into and understanding of people who live in northern and rural regions for our graduates, including those who will go on to work in urban specialist centres.

Our students are taught and supported by a close-knit faculty and health care community in the north. Due to our smaller class sizes, our students often develop strong and long-lasting relationships with our local health care providers, faculty and researchers.

We are very proud of our close connections to northern and Indigenous communities in our region. These help our students to gain a unique rural perspective through exposure to the health issues that people living and working in northern and remote environments face. Through learning experiences in our regional hospitals, clinics, Indigenous health centres and small health facilities, our students receive a very broad clinical exposure with tremendous opportunities to learn, develop and practice their skills. I truly believe that the breadth of skills and knowledge base that our students acquire in our programs prepares them for any career in medicine and health professions across Canada and the world.
