Get More Than a Yes. Get Consent… and Keep Checking.
Consent is more than a single word, it’s an ongoing conversation. At UNBC, we promote consent that’s clear, enthusiastic, and continuous.
What is Consent?
- Consent means giving or getting clear permission that is freely given, informed, and can be changed or withdrawn at any time.
- It is rooted in respect, communication, and choice. Consent applies to all kinds of interactions.
- Consent is not a one-time checkbox; it’s a fluid process that promotes safety, autonomy, and mutual understanding.
Why Keep Checking (“More than a Yes”)
- Consent is not a one-time question. It is a conversation that continues.
- “More than a Yes” means:
- Checking in at every stage, not just once.
- Noticing both words and body language.
- Listening for enthusiasm, not just agreement.
- Understanding that consent can change at any time, and that is okay.
- Continuous communication fosters an environment where both people feel safe, respected, and empowered to express what they do or do not want.
Everyday Consent
Consent applies everywhere, not just in sexual situations.
- Ask before you:
- Hug someone
- Post a photo
- Record a conversation
- Edit someone’s work
- Always check first. Respecting boundaries builds trust in all contexts.
Sexual Consent
- Before touching, kissing, or moving forward sexually, always check in.
- Sexual consent must be:
- Clear – verbally or through mutual understanding
- Enthusiastic – an affirmative, positive response
- Ongoing – easily withdrawn or changed if needed
Resources and Support
- It is OK to keep checking:
- Clear Communication – Talk openly about what you both want and do not want.
- Mutual Agreement – Ensure both feel comfortable, excited, and free to change their mind.
- Comfort – Check that your partner feels safe, relaxed, and supported.
- Respect – Listen actively, value boundaries, and never pressure each other.
- Things to Remember:
- Real consent is enthusiastic, informed, and freely given.
- Consent can be taken back at any time.
