Introduction

This Cookie Notice will inform you about how and why the University of Northern British Columbia ("UNBC") uses cookies and other tracking technologies. We will also tell you which cookies we use and some information about third parties which also place cookies on our website.

What is a cookie?

Cookies are small text files that are stored on your device and which let us make your experience better and more efficient. They allow us to recognize your device and browser, and store information for the improvement of our services. There are a few different types of cookies. Cookies can either last for the duration of your session, or be persistent after your session ends. They can also be managed and placed by UNBC directly, or by a third party. Below is a basic definition of the types of cookies we use.

Session Cookies and Persistent Cookies

  • Session cookies are stored temporarily on the memory of your devices while you are visiting the website and are erased once you close your browser.
  • Persistent Cookies are stored for a predetermined amount of time, which varies from cookie to cookie. It is longer than the session cookies; however they also expire after some months. They aid us to understand whether you have previously visited our website or similar sites in the past.

First Party and Third Party Cookies

  • First Party cookies are set directly by the UNBC website or by any of the subdomains of the website.
  • Third-party cookies are set by organizations not managed by UNBC, such as service providers and technology partners.

Other Tracking Technologies We Use

Not all technologies that collect information on your device are cookies. UNBC also uses other tracking technologies, such as JavaScript, to support certain website features. These technologies may collect information like your browser type, device information, and how you interact with our website. Some of these tools are essential for the website to function. Non-essential tools will only run if you give consent through our cookie preference tool.

How can I manage my cookie preferences?

UNBC uses a cookie management tool, Osano, to gain consent from website users to place non-essential cookies. To manage your cookie preferences, you can click on the "Cookie" icon on the bottom right of the website. You can change your preferences and withdraw consent at any time. Whenever we introduce a new cookie, a new prompt for you to update your preferences will be displayed. Essential cookies are required for the functioning of the website and cannot be disabled. To avoid all cookies, you should cease using our website and clear your browser cache. If you have compliance or privacy concerns, you can contact privacy@unbc.ca

How can I block cookies?

You may stop or restrict the placement of cookies and other tracking technologies, such as pixel tags. You do this by blocking them on your device or by removing them and adjusting preferences on your browser. This may vary from device to device and from browser to browser.

Please see the links below for guidance on how to modify your web browser’s settings on the most popular browsers:
