Freedom of Information Requests

Access to information at UNBC is governed by the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA). Under FOIPPA, students, employees, and members of the public have the right to request access to their own personal information or general information held by UNBC, and the right to request the correction of their own personal information.

Freedom of information requests, or access requests, are managed by the Office of University Governance. Requests for information or to correct information, must be made in writing to privacy@unbc.ca. UNBC employees that receive an access request can forward the request to the same email address.

To help UNBC identify the records you are requesting, the following information should be provided with the access request:

  • The date, or suspected date, of the record’s creation.
  • The type of record requested – please provide sufficient detail to enable an experienced employee with reasonable effort to identify the records.
  • Written proof that you have the authority to make the request if you are making the request on behalf of another person.

After an access request has been received, UNBC has 30 business days to respond to the request. Access requests that are expected to take more than 3 hours to complete may be subject to fees as per section 75 of FOIPPA. Fees do not apply to a request made for an applicant’s own personal information.

Any complaints related to access requests can be first made in writing to privacy@unbc.ca. If you are unsatisfied with UNBC’s response, you may submit a formal complaint to British Columbia’s Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) here.
