Arne and Lesley Carlson Scholarship

This $500 award was established in honour of Arne and Lesley Carlson in celebration of their lives and of their life work in Archaeology. Available to a full-time student who has completed a minimum of 60 credit hours and has declared a major in Anthropology focusing on the archaeology of northern British Columbia

Ann McQuaid Memorial Scholarship

UNBC established this award in recognition of Ann McQuaid's outstanding contribution to the community of Prince George. This award is available to a student enrolled at UNBC who has completed at least 30 credit hours towards an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences, and  Humanities, and who demonstrates community service, involvement and leadership.

Elizabeth Kellie Chapter IODE - Josephine Swann Bursary

Mrs. Carrie Crawley established this tribute in memory of her mother, Mrs. Josephine Swann who was a life-long member of IODE and, along with Mary Martin, established the Elizabeth Kellie Chapter and upheld the mission statement of IODE to improve the quality of life for her children, youth and those in need, through educational, social service and citizenship programs. This award is available to a full-time student who is a Canadian citizen and enrolled in an Arts and Science or Health and Human Science program. Preference will be given to a graduate of a northern BC high school.

James McDonald Memorial Award

This award has been established to honour the memory of founding UNBC Anthropology Professor Dr. James (Jim) Andrew McDonald. During his time at UNBC Jim was an exceptional Chair of the Anthropology Department; he also served in that role for the First Nations Studies Department, as well serving a term as Director of the First Nations Centre. Jim’s research focused on First Nations social organization, political economy, decolonization and land tenure with the Tsimshian community of Kitsumkalum being his primary focus. Jim also worked with the Nisga'a on local education issues, helped to organize anthropology field schools in Russia, and studied the recovery of the Gaelic language and culture in Scotland. Jim was past-President of the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies and a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. 

This $1000 award is available to a full time graduate student, or a senior undergraduate student who has completed 60 credit hours. Applicants may be enrolled across disciplines but with a focus in the anthropology of indigenous or northern communities. Graduate student applicants in the Interdisciplinary Studies (IDIS) Program must have anthropology as their home department. 

Seniors Festival Bursary

The now disbanded Seniors Festival Committee organized the Seniors Festival at the Pacific National Exhibition for a number of years. The PNE has now taken over operations for the Festival. The Seniors Festival Committee wanted their remaining funds to support a deserving UNBC student. This award is available to a full-time student enrolled in the Faculty of Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences, and Humanities or Health Sciences  who has completed a minimum of 60 credit hours.

Beatrice Medicine Fellowship for Native Women in Anthropology

The Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) recognizes the life and legacy of Dr. Beatrice Medicine with a student travel award named in her honor. An esteemed anthropologist and member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Dr. Medicine’s work emphasized cultural understanding, particularly around Native peoples, and her contributions continue to inspire future generations. Her notable publications include Learning to Be an Anthropologist and Remaining Native (2001) and Drinking and Sobriety Among the Lakota Sioux (2006).

The Peter Kong-ming New Student Research Competition

Awarded through the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA), the The Peter Kong-ming New Student Research Competition, celebrates outstanding student research in the applied social and behavioral sciences. This prestigious award honors Peter Kong-ming New, a distinguished medical sociologist-anthropologist and former SfAA president, whose work focused on applying the social sciences to address critical issues in health care and human services.

The competition awards the best student papers on a research project related to health care or human services, reflecting his dedication to these fields. Open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled during the calendar year prior to the award presentation.

Field School & Training Course Bursary

Awarded through the Canadian Association for Biological Anthropology (CABA), the Field School & Training Course Bursary is a funding opportunity available to undergraduate and graduate students participating in national and international field programs or training courses related to biological anthropology. Two bursaries will be awarded each year, one at the undergraduate level and one at the graduate level. Applications will be adjudicated based on the quality of the proposal, its relevance to the student’s academic interests, and the budget justification. Any EDI applicants will be prioritized. All successful applicants are required to provide a written report to the CABA membership on their experience to be published in the Fall Newsletter.
