August 30, 2007
Classes in the 2007-08 academic year will begin on Tuesday, September 4. There are a number of new initiatives beginning this year:

Facilities

The Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre will officially open on September 21 and will provide members of the community and students with expanded opportunities for fitness and recreation. Measuring just over 140,000 square feet, the building is the largest on campus and contains a fieldhouse, gymnasium, indoor track, weight room, exercise studios, a sport medicine clinic and more.

At the opposite end of the Prince George campus, the new 92,000 square foot Teaching and Learning Centre is providing additional classroom, study, and lab space.
Programs
A new Rural Acute Care Nursing Certificate program is providing practicing nurses with the opportunity to gain certification in rural nursing. The program was developed following consultation with the Ministry of Health, Northern Health, and more than 200 rural nurses. The program is being delivered largely through the internet to ensure access.

For the first time starting this fall, The University’s Continuing Studies program is offering courses that count for credit towards completing a degree. “From the opening of the Sport Centre to the development of innovative program options, this will be an exciting year for UNBC,” says UNBC President Don Cozzetto. “It’s a competitive environment for all post-secondary institutions so we must respond with programs and services that will be attractive to students, while working to strengthen our connection with communities.”

Preliminary enrolment estimates will be known by the end of September. UNBC attracts nearly 4200 students per year, about 3500 of whom attend classes in the fall semester.
