UNBC Offers New Course Options

Continuing Studies to Offer Credit Courses
August 15, 2007
For the first time starting this fall, UNBC will offer courses through Continuing Studies that will also count towards completing a degree. A total of 39 credit courses will be offered through Continuing Studies and the first courses will begin on September 5.

The courses are in topics generally not covered through UNBC’s existing academic offerings. They include courses in visual and performing arts, music, music education for elementary school teachers, languages, natural resources, astronomy, mental health and wellness, and Christianity. Full certificates will be available in Music, Music Education, Christian Studies, and Mental Health and Addictions.

The credit courses can be applied as electives toward the completion of most UNBC bachelor’s degrees. Credits earned through Continuing Studies will be held in reserve until the student is admitted into a degree program at UNBC. Students in Continuing Studies are not required to follow the normal University application process.

“This is something new for UNBC but we see it as an innovative way to make a greater variety of courses available to people in a more flexible way,” says UNBC President Don Cozzetto. “The instructors for these courses are experts in their fields. Students who take these courses may just want to take them for personal interest or to gain a certificate, but they also have the opportunity to transfer them towards completing a degree.”

The new credit courses are part of Continuing Studies’ total roster of more than 260 courses. The offerings include English Language training for non-English speakers, professional development opportunities, and courses for personal interest. Last year, there were nearly 3400 registrations in Continuing Studies courses.

Registration in the 2007-08 offerings is now being accepted.

Continuing Studies is one of the departments located in the new Teaching and Learning Centre at the north end of the campus.
