Recycling Info Competition

Recycling Info Competition (Deadline March 18, 2024)

Do you care about the planet? Do you want to teach your fellow students and peers how to reduce the amount of waste that they produce and increase recycling rates? Do you find that the Recycling Education at UNBC is inadequate?

If so we want you to be rewarded for designing our recycling information, posters/signage on campus.

There will be an ultimate cash prize of $250 up for grabs for the best entry, and shortlisted participants will be provided lunch at the Moose. If you win and we use your materials, your work will also be promoted by the University, and you will have a lasting record of your creativity and innovation that you can reference and share to help with future employability or for bragging rights.

Working together in teams of up to 4 (working in teams is encouraged), you will create content for one of two categories:

1) How to recycle signs for our external recycling bins. Photos of bins as follows:

Generic Recycling and Garbage bins around campus

Categories: garbage, paper/cardboard, plastic containers, beverage recycling

Recycling Room bins (located by Distributions and Shipping)

Categories: mixed containers (non-refundables) (plastic, metal), paper, scrap metal, refundable beverage containers (cardboard cartons, plastic cartons, plastic bottles), large batteries, small batteries, lightbulbs, glass, cardboard (in the cardboard compactor), rigid styrofoam

2) Awareness raising material for students as videos, and web content that will form part of new student inductions and education of our existing campus population, such as through social media. You can generate this content through a medium of your choice such as TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, physical posters or QR code linked web content.

How to enter:

The competition will open for entries from February 16, 2024 to March 18, 2024. You will be able to submit your entry by emailing sustainability@unbc.ca. Please submit the raw file (from the software you are using) and a finished version (.pdf, youtube video etc.) so that we can re-size based on the requirements - all final designs used will be attributed to the original designer.
The winners will be announced on Green Day March 26, 2024.
If you have any questions, you can contact the UNBC Sustainability Team at Sustainability@unbc.ca.

Who can take part?

All current undergraduate or graduate students can apply. You will work as a team of up to 4 people. Teams can be made up of students from different departments and subjects.

What are we looking for?

Winning entries are likely to meet the following criteria:

  • Increase recycling rates on campus – making sure that people know where to recycle things and how to do it correctly
  • Encourage a reduction in the volume of overall waste produced e.g. by encouraging greater reuse of items as opposed to purchase and/or disposal
  • Support the implementation of UNBC's Sustainability Strategy and the Green University designation
  • Be fun, innovative, creative and engaging so that students will want to engage with the content, remember and share it with friends.
