Full-Time and Part-Time Graduate Student Status

Full-Time Graduate Students

Course Load

Full-time status students need to register in at least six (6) credit hours per semester. 

Tuition

Full-time students pay a minimum of six (6) semesters of full-time tuition fee units for their program plus ancillary/student fees

Federal Granting Agencies

Only students with full-time status can apply for Canadian federal granting agency scholarships:

  • Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)
  • Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
  • Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) 

UNBC Awards​

Only applicants with full-time status can be considered for the prestigious UNBC Graduate Entrance Scholarship (GES) and UNBC Graduate Entrance Research Awards (GERA). 

Other UNBC Scholarships/Awards have varying criteria regarding part-time and full-time student status. Review the eligibility criteria carefully.

Canada and Provincial Student Loans require students to be full-time graduate students. 


Part-Time Graduate Students

Part-time students pay a minimum of twelve (12) semesters of part-time tuition fee units for their program plus ancillary/student fees. 

UNBC Awards

Applicants with part-time status are not eligible for the prestigious UNBC Graduate Entrance Scholarship (GES) nor the UNBC Graduate Entrance Research Awards (GERA).
