The University of Northern British Columbia Women’s soccer team has added a major dose of speed and athleticism, officially announcing the commitment of Lexy Green for the 2019-2020 Canada West season.

“I am very excited to come to UNBC. Playing soccer at the university level has always been a dream of mine, and I am happy Neil (Sedgwick) gave me the opportunity to make my dreams a reality. I think I am going to be able to grow and develop here, and I want to help them go to the next level.”

The native of Surrey, B.C. is a speedy forward/wing, who has the ability to put pressure on opposing defenders. The team-first culture of the Timberwolves was appealing to Green, who spent time with UNBC midfielder Kiana Swift this week.

“Especially these last few days here, I roomed with Kiana. They have all been so welcoming. Sometimes, it could be tense with new people coming onto the team, and they’re coming into your position, but everyone has been really encouraging and welcoming. They have been helping me out in any way.”

Set to graduate from Elgin Park Secondary in June, Green has visited the UNBC campus twice, and says the close-knit environment was crucial in her decision. The honour roll student plans to study molecular biology during her time in Prince George.

“I visited in November and I really liked the campus. I had toured a couple other schools and they seemed really big. I felt like just another number. But, I came here, and it was a completely different feel. You get that bonus of having a small university experience. I think this is a good fit for me.”

TWolves coach Neil Sedwick met his newest recruit in 2018 and immediately identified Green as a player with the potential to impact the program at the Canada West level.

“Lexy has a complete openness to learning and is committed to her personal growth and the growth of this team. Coming in as a technically solid player, it is exciting to anticipate the type of contributor she will be for our program. She has adapted quickly, and has shown a keen interest in developing what we like to see from the players, in terms of their visual awareness. Lexy truly is an exciting prospect.”

The 17-year-old, who is also a competitive horseback rider, trained with Fusion FC as a youth player. Standing five-foot-five, Green is not the most physically imposing player on the pitch, but she is ready for the challenge.

“I think I am pretty fast. If you put that long ball over the top, I am going to get it on the other end. I am pretty aggressive, too. I don’t give up easy, and no one is going to get the ball from me without a fight.”

Green will join her Timberwolves teammates for training camp in Prince George in August.

“It’s definitely going to be tough. I am going to have to prove myself every practice and I am going to have to show I am tough enough and strong enough to earn my place. It is exciting. It is a new chapter of my life and I can’t wait to start it.”
