Maria Mongomo has earned Canada West Female Third Star of the Week recognition.
Mongomo, a native of Las Palmas, Spain and a second-year forward from the women’s basketball team, scored 25 points, grabbed 22 rebounds and dished out seven assists in a two-game sweep over the Mount Royal last weekend at home.
On Friday, Jan. 13, Mongomo showed why she is the most diverse players in the country. She tallied a 10-point, 11-rebound, five-assist performance in just 26 minutes, as the Timberwolves took out the Cougars 70-48. The following evening, she had 15 points, 11 rebounds, and two steals as UNBC completed a crucial sweep of Mount Royal with a 64-55 victory.
The T-Wolves improved to 5-9 and are firmly in the playoff picture. Mongomo has been an incredible contributor all season, with 15.9 points per game (9th in CW), 8.4 rebounds per game (7th in CW), 3.1 assist per games (10th in CW), and 2.8 steals per game (6th in CW).
First star went to Katie Polischuk from the Regina Cougars basketball team. Nicole Karstein from the University of Victoria’s basketball team earned second-star honours.
