The University of Regina Cougars Women’s basketball team kept their undefeated streak going, defeating the University of Northern British Columbia by a score of 88-53 Friday evening at the Charles Jago Northern Sports Centre.

The Cougars defense proved to be the early difference, forcing the Timberwolves into a number of turnovers that they turned into fast break points. Clearly having scouted the TWolves attack, Regina doubled post Vasiliki Louka every time she got the ball.

“Louka is a really big threat for them, she is tall and skilled,” said Cougars guard Sara Hubenig. “We really wanted to get in there and help our posts. We had to really play team defense.”

Madison Landry provided much of the UNBC offense when baskets were tough to come by, extending her hot start to the season. She would finish with 25 points on 11 of 14 shooting from the field.

“They’re really aggressive on defense, and I think that got us a little frazzled,” said Landy postgame. “I don’t know how prepared we were for that. But we know it now, and we will be ready tomorrow.”

At the half, the Cougars led the Timberwolves 38-24.

Early in the third quarter, the TWolves pushed to close the gap. They had their best scoring quarter of the game, notching 21 points, but Regina responded with 28 points in ten minutes.

Candice Goncalves came off the bench to pace the Cougars with 19 points, who pulled away in the fourth quarter to take the game 88-53.

Regina also got 14 points from Lauryn Prokop on perfect 5-for-5 shooting, while Kyanna Giles pitched in with 12 points and eight boards.

“We have really good team chemistry,” said Hubenig. “Everyone works well together, we buy into what our coach is saying, and we just play as a team.”

Louka had eight points and 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who also had 12 points from Emily Aase off the bench.

“I think we came out a little flat,” said Landry. “I think, for tomorrow, we will put some different things together and look for a better result.”

The win improves the Cougars record to 5-0 and drops the record of the Timberwolves to 2-5. These two will face off again Saturday, November 18 at 5 PM.
