PRINCE GEORGE, B.C.

The University of Northern British Columbia’s Women’s basketball team has solidified its backcourt, committing point guard Abby Gibb for the 2017-2018 season.

The five-foot-eight guard will transfer from St. Mary’s University of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference, where she led the Lightning to a 16-5 record last season.

“I’m really excited and honoured to be joining the Timberwolves. The combination of finding a great place to play and continue my career path as a student-athlete really fit well at UNBC,” she said. “I am really excited to get to know my future teammates, coaches, teachers, and fellow students.”

Gibb played two years at Mount Royal University, before transferring to STMU. With St. Mary’s, she averaged 11.6 points per game, 3.7 rebounds per game, and 3.5 assists per game, which was good four fourth in the ACAC.

“I hope to bring to the team my strong passion for basketball, my work ethic offensively and defensively, and my decision-making as a point guard. My strong desire to compete brings out the best in my teammates, which is something I look to achieve every day.”

The Calgary native was familiar with UNBC through her time competing with the Timberwolves while at MRU. Gibb said her visit to Prince George this spring was critical in her decision to transfer.

“On my visit, I felt an immediate connection. Having access to a beautiful facility, with motivated coaches, trainers, and teammates made my decision to attend UNBC much easier.”

UNBC coach Sergey Shchepotkin says Gibb, who paced the Lightning in assists, will bring intangibles to the Timberwolves backcourt.

“Abby’s court management will help us hugely. She has experience at the Canada West level, and she understands offensive movement and getting her teammates the ball in scoring position.”

A 2014 graduate of Dr E.P. Scarlett Secondary, Gibb will continue her education in Health Sciences, with an eventual goal of working with children with disabilities.

“UNBC’s smaller campus and class sizes, as well as they’re desire for each individual to succeed, really attracted me to the university. Everything seemed so accessible and supportive for every student.”

Gibb joins a Timberwolves lineup led by Canada West all-star Maria Mongomo, and team MVP Vasiliki Louka. A chance to contribute to a playoff push was a major plus for the guard.

“I’m honoured to be part of a team that made Canada West playoffs last year. Their determination to do more, and go further, is something I am beyond excited to be a part of.”

With her STMU teammates, Gibb advanced to the 2017 ACAC championship game, before falling to the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. She hopes to utilize those moments to help the Timberwolves take the next step in Canada West.

“Making it all the way to the ACAC Championship with St. Mary’s last year was a great learning experience. I can’t wait for the many more exciting opportunities to come as a UNBC Timberwolf.”
