PRINCE GEORGE, B.C.

The University of Northern British Columbia’s Men’s basketball program has added a dose of athleticism with the commitment of Kaelen Mcneight for the 2017-2018 season.

The native of North Vancouver will redshirt his first campaign with the Timberwolves, a decision Mcneight believes will aid his development.

“I’m willing to do whatever Coach thinks is right for me. If he wants me to save a year of eligibility, then I am definitely okay with that.”

Coach Todd Jordan welcomed the six-foot-four swingman to a Timberwolves identification camp this Spring, and is thrilled to welcome Mcneight to the UNBC program moving forward.

“Red-shirting for a season will give him an opportunity to spend a bit more time in the weight room, and develop his body. We think he has a ton of potential to develop into a very good player for our program.”

Set to graduate from Sentinel Secondary this June, he sees the upcoming season as a chance to work on his arsenal.

“I just want to try to lock down on defence, run the lanes, and hit open three-pointers. My game, at this point, is catch-and-shoot, and driving the lanes to attack the hoop.”

At the ID camp, Mcneight didn’t back down from any challenge, including covering established Canada West veterans. Jordan identified his willingness to compete as a huge asset.

“Kaelen is a hard-working athlete who came in and really impressed us at camp. He is still growing, and developing his athleticism, and he has the right mindset to come in and make our program better.”

With plans to pursue his education in the School of Business, Mcneight cited his visit to campus and interaction with his future teammates as a catalyst for his decision.

“All the guys were so nice. They want you to be successful, and the Northern Sport Centre facility is unbelievable. Nothing compares to it.”

Mcneight sports a twinkle in his eye, when speaking of the path he took to reach the Canada West. He will join his Timberwolves teammates this summer, and looks to take another step towards realizing a dream.

“I didn’t know if I could do it, when I started playing basketball. I have worked really hard over the past few years to get to the highest level I could play at.”
