UNBC is a new university that has attracted young scholars with interdisciplinary interests. The research team in this proposal is made up of excellent, emerging scholars. They are all at an early or transitional stage in their careers and all are eligible for the New Opportunities Fund. While Dr. Summerville’s tenure track position began in 1999, she took a six-month maternity / parental leave. The researchers all share an interest in developing innovative research projects that meet international standards and are expected to become future leaders both in their fields and across disciplines. All of the researchers have demonstrated strong potential in their professional and academic careers, pioneering innovative research methodologies and theories that promise to lead to breakthroughs in the ways in which social sciences research is conducted and data analyzed. Already some of the team members have had articles published in prestigious journals of national and international scope. Further, the researchers have extended their collaborations within the university to include senior colleagues in both the Arts and Sciences as well as to researchers in other universities and institutions in Canada abroad.

All of the researchers have demonstrated their capacity for leadership and innovation in their fields and across disciplines. They all do community based research that facilitates the direct application of research outcomes to inform public policy on community sustainability. Their focus on northern communities is important in an international context because the results can be applied to similar resource-dependent and aboriginal communities trying to survive, not only economically but also culturally, in a context of globalization.
