UNBC School of Business Awarded on National Scale

| Faculty from UNBC’s School of Business arrived home from St. Johns, NL with two prestigious academic awards last week. The group attended the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada (ASAC) conference, the largest academic business conference in Canada with over 900 participants, which recognizes excellence in business research. Members are based in business and related faculties at Canadian and international post-secondary institutions as well as private and public sector organizations UNBC’s School of Business submitted seven research papers at the conference, two of which involved UNBC students. All were double blind peer-reviewed, meaning that papers are evaluated on their own merit and the researcher who submits the paper does not influence the paper’s assessment. The research paper by Dr. John Curry, Dr. Han Donker, and Paul Michel, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development within First Nations, received Best Paper Award in the category Entrepreneurship and Family Business. It illustrates how entrepreneurship developed in First Nations communities can have a positive impact on employment and was a unique collaborative effort between three unrelated departments: Business, First Nations studies and Environmental Planning. Dr. Balbinder Deo accepted the Research Excellence Award in the primarily undergraduate category on behalf of UNBC’s School of Business for research submissions made to the conference. All of the awards were pre-assigned before the ceremony, except the top award of the evening and most prestigious: the Research Excellence Award which UNBC won. “To receive the award was so unexpected,” explains Dr. Deo. “Through this award, UNBC is being recognized for our commitment to research on a national scale, which, as one of only four research-intensive universities in BC, is significant. We’re so proud of this institution and the colleagues who supported us.” Han Donker, Chair of UNBC’s School of Business agrees. “A pattern of excellence is emerging. We exhibit the whole spectrum of teaching, learning and research here at UNBC, and these awards confirm the high level of academic achievement exhibited by our faculty and students.” |
