An Online Visual History of the North

March 17, 2009
The Northern BC Archives at  the Geoffrey R. Weller Library at UNBC has recently completed digitization of over 1700 historical images of exploration in Northern British Columbia in the early 20th century. These images from 8 distinct collections feature visual documentation of diverse subjects including that of early town site development of Fort Fraser, Hazelton. Fort George and Prince Rupert; Grand Trunk Pacific Railway construction; big game hunting expeditions in the Peace River region; natural history expeditions, and commercial and economic exploratory activity within several Northern BC communities c.1900-c.1939.
These images are now available on the Archives on-line  database. Funding assistance for this digital initiative was received from the BC History Digitization Program, which is funded by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at the University of British Columbia.
To view the digital photographs visit the site or follow the link to the “Northern Explorations and Development” News Page found on the Archives Website.
