New Chair of the Board Named

November 7, 2008
Dawn Martin, a tireless advocate for education in northern BC, is the new Chair of the UNBC Board of Governors.

Ms. Martin has been a member of the Board since 2006 but her career in education started nearly 30 years ago. Starting in 1980, she taught at various schools in School Districts #82 and #88 and held positions ranging from teacher-librarian to Principal. She completed her career in education as the Director of Instruction (Student Support Services) for School District #82. She is currently Vice-President for the Canadian Society for the Advancement of Excellence in Education and Chair of the Northwest Education ‘88’ Foundation. She has lived in Terrace for nearly 40 years and has also been active with local boards for the library, child development, hospital, and hospital foundation.

Ms. Martin succeeds Dr. Don Rix, who has served as Chair of the UNBC Board of Governors since early 2005 and is stepping down from the Board after nearly 6 years of service.

The Board of Governors and the Senate are the University’s two primary governing bodies. The Senate oversees academic issues while the Board is responsible for the finances and operation of the University.
