Local Student Receives Scholarship Valued at More Than $100,000

September 23, 2008
Cherisse Seaton, a UNBC student pursuing a doctoral degree in Psychology, has received the most valuable scholarship ever awarded to a UNBC student. She has been awarded a Joseph-Armand Bombardier doctoral scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) valued at $35,000 per year for three years; a total value of $105,000.

Ms. Seaton explores adult emotions and resilience manifested in individual behaviours, ranging from intimacy to forgiveness. She is pursuing her PhD under the supervision of professor Sherry Beaumont. She completed both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UNBC and previously attended O’Grady Catholic High School and PGSS.

In addition to announcing the doctoral award to Ms. Seaton, SSHRC has announced other student awards and research funding:

  • Five UNBC students received Joseph-Armand Bombardier master’s level awards. They are Serena George (studying homeless adolescents), Kelsey Wiebe (the Fort Simpson fur trade), Sherri Tillotson (cross-cultural social interaction), Jacqueline Lytle (poverty in developing countries), and Chelan Hoffman (emerging regional governance structures in BC).
  • Two faculty members have received research grants from SSHRC in 2008. Social Work professor Judy Hughes is exploring the intervention strategies of service providers in dealing with violence against women in rural and remote communities. Marketing professor Sungchul Choi is studying the effectiveness of strategies that provide ambiguity and chance in price-reduction claims.

“UNBC is proud of the achievements of our students and faculty in national competitions,” says Gail Fondahl, Vice-President Research at UNBC. “Over the past several years, the number of graduate students has doubled at UNBC and they are helping to enrich the research environment at UNBC. We thank SSHRC and the other federal granting councils for enabling UNBC researchers to explore topics of both local and international significance.”
