Second Annual Alumni Homecoming

September 16, 2008
The University of Northern British Columbia Alumni Association will be holding its second annual “homecoming” this weekend, strengthening the connection between UNBC grads and their alma mater. Events will be held on September 19 and 20.

A number of events have been organized, and while they are designed to attract alumni participation, they are also featuring alumni:

  • UNBC grad Robyn Bruneski (BA English 2005) is the wine expert who will preside over a wine tasting and art appreciation event on Friday evening. Robyn is a wine sommelier who will share her knowledge of wines and cheese pairing in the Atrium of the Dr. Donald Rix Northern Health Sciences Centre. A display of art and historical materials will also be presented by the UNBC Arts Council. The event will start at 7:30pm and admission is $10 - $15.
  • The Homecoming Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday at the Aberdeen Glen Golf Club. Teams comprised of at least two alumni will compete for a cash prize and the honour of being the first to have their names engraved on the alumni golf trophy.
  • Basketball games, pitting the current UNBC Timberwolves men’s and women’s basketball team against teams made up of alumni, will be Saturday evening at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre. The women’s game will be at 6pm, followed by the men at 7:15. Admission is free.
  • Following the basketball games will be an Alumni Pub Night featuring comedian – and UNBC grad – Brian Majore (BA General Studies 2006). End homecoming with a laugh, starting at 9:30pm in the UNBC Cafeteria.

“It’s really important to us that as we build a sense of community among alumni, that we strengthen the bond between alumni and the University. Ultimately, it’s the history we have with UNBC that is what we all have in common,” says Dana Helgason, Vice-President of the Alumni Association Executive. “We hope that many alumni will take the opportunity to come back to UNBC, see what has changed, and build new or existing relationships with their fellow alumni.”

The graduating class of 2008 was UNBC’s largest to date. 830 students graduated this year, pushing the total number of UNBC alumni to just over 7300.
