Commerce Program Adds Major in Human Resources Management

April 21st, 2008

The UNBC School of Business is adding a new major this fall that will provide students with skills in Human Resources Management.

The goal of the new major is to develop individuals who are capable of assuming roles of strategic responsibility and leadership within the HR function of their organizations.  Courses will expose students to issues of recruitment and retention, training and development, workplace health and safety, and labour relations. Upon completion, students will be awarded a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

“This is an important time to offer students in Northern BC a university-level Human Resource Management degree,” says Bob Ellis, Chair of the University’s School of Business. “Many northern organizations are challenged by issues of recruitment, retention, turnover, and training in a fast-growing economy characterized by fierce competition for skilled employees. In addition, obtaining a degree will be a requirement for obtaining the Certified Human Resource Professional designation from the BC Human Resource Management Association by 2011.”

The program will start in September and will admit twenty students. Information sessions are being planned; check the website for details: www.unbc.ca/commerce.

The School of Business also offers majors in Accounting, General Business, Finance, International Business, and Marketing.
