New Certificate in Music Education

April 10, 2008
The University of Northern British Columbia will be offering a new program through its Continuing Studies department that will provide elementary school teachers with certification in music education. The new program is designed to offer teachers, regardless of their musical background, the skills necessary to incorporate music into the regular elementary school curriculum.

“Music has long been recognized for its positive effects on the personal and education development of children, but few schools have music specialists,” says Randall Brazzoni, Director of UNBC Continuing Studies. “In School District 57, only six of the District’s 40 elementary schools have programs with a music specialist. The situation is similar across the northern BC. Providing this certificate program in the North will enable more teachers to gain this specialization.”

Courses will cover basic music theories; music’s ability to stimulate and increase childhood mental capacity; the relevance and application of music to the elementary school curriculum; and various music concepts and techniques for incorporating both vocal and instrumental exercises into the classroom.

Coursework will be delivered over two summers with a practical term in between, lasting the duration of the academic year. Registrations are currently being accepted with a deadline of May 15th. Registration is limited to a maximum of twenty students. Classes will start in July.

Instructors will include Gerda Blok-Wilson and Carolyn Duerkson, both music specialists within School District 57 and highly accomplished choral directors. The program has also attracted two nationally recognized music educators: Bernard Turgeon, a renowned Canadian baritone, Neuro-Linguistic practitioner, and former faculty member at McGill University, as well as Denise Gagne, a music specialist and founder of Musicplay, a music education program adopted by school districts internationally.

UNBC Continuing Studies offers more than 200 courses annually. Last year, more than 2,500 students registered for courses in Continuing Studies.
