Spectra Energy Awards Aboriginal Bursaries

September 19, 2007
The media is invited to attend the University of Northern British Columbia campus on Monday, September 24, when ten Aboriginal UNBC students will each receive $2,500 bursaries from Spectra Energy Transmission. The new student awards mark the company’s 50th year of operations in British Columbia.

“Operating in BC for fifty years, Spectra Energy has deep roots in this province and we share long-standing relationships with its Aboriginal communities,” says Steve Henderson, Manager, Community and Aboriginal Relations for Spectra Energy. “UNBC has been a valued community outreach partner for Spectra Energy since the university’s earliest days. We see these bursaries as providing tangible and meaningful opportunities to support Aboriginal students in the pursuit of their educational goals.”

More than 10% of UNBC’s students are Aboriginal, the highest proportion of any university in British Columbia.

Spectra Energy, with more than 1,000 employees in Western Canada, is one of North America’s premier natural gas infrastructure companies involved in the gathering and processing, transmission and storage, and distribution of natural gas. Spectra Energy’s operations include assets that were originally known as Westcoast Transmission. The company has more than 7,000 kilometres of pipeline and five processing facilities in BC.
