April 25, 2007
Canadian Forest Products Ltd. has made the largest contribution to date
in support of what will be one of British Columbia’s premier sport
facilities. The company is contributing $500,000 towards the cost of
building the $30.5 million Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre. “This is an incredible day for UNBC, the City of Prince George, and the entire region of northern British Columbia,” says UNBC President Don Cozzetto. “This facility will revolutionize the opportunities for citizens both young and old to pursue their athletic dreams and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Thank you to Canfor for supporting our vision so enthusiastically.” “Today’s announcement further demonstrates Canfor’s continuing support for UNBC,” says Canfor Chairman Peter Bentley. “We are so proud of the University and the role it is playing in realizing the aspirations of the North and its people. This facility is a testament to your determination and potential and Canfor is proud to play a role in making it a reality.” “I toured the NSC last week for the first time and I can just imagine how excited residents of this area will be when they walk inside for the first time,” says Ted Perry, Canfor’s General Manager of Community Relations in Prince George. “Sport and education is a powerful combination and one that speaks to the future vitality of our community. What an honour it is for us to be part of this.” The Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre is currently under construction at the entrance to UNBC’s Prince George campus. It is the result of a unique partnership between the University and the City of Prince George, together with PacificSport, the BC sport development agency. The 145,000 square foot facility will house a three-court gymnasium with seating for 2000, a fieldhouse with room for two indoor soccer fields, an elevated 280m indoor track, offices for high-performance sport coaches, sport medicine and physiotherapy services, and weight and cardio equipment. The Government of British Columbia has provided $20.5 million of the total cost of constructing the Northern Sport Centre. The official opening ceremony is scheduled for September 21.
