Business Students Win Top Awards in Western Canadian Competition

January 31, 2007
University of Northern British Columbia students in the School of Business captured two top awards in western Canada’s largest business competition, held recently in Vancouver.

JDC West attracted student teams from 10 western Canadian universities who compete in competitions based on a variety of academic case studies that draw on the students' skills in marketing, accounting, finance, entrepreneurship, international business, etc. In its first year in the competition, UNBC won first place in Marketing and Accounting and captured third in International Business. No other university captured more first place honours in the case study competition.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for our students. All of the faculty are so proud of what our students have achieved,” says Bob Ellis, Chair of the UNBC School of Business. “Special congratulations are due to fourth-year student Stephen English, who organized UNBC’s team on behalf of the whole program, and Phil Hancyk, President of the Commerce Student Society. Our students are gaining incredible leadership and business skills by participating in these events.”

“The JDC West competition attracted about 450 students this year and it speaks volumes about the quality of education at UNBC when our students rise to the top,” says UNBC President Don Cozzetto. “Their accomplishment is celebrated by everyone at UNBC.”

With more than 600 majors, the School of Business is UNBC’s most popular program.

The next event for the Commerce Student Society is a community business dinner on February 7 at the Ramada Hotel. Guest speakers will be Bruce Sutherland and Don Krusel, CEO of the Prince Rupert Port Authority.
