UNBC Board to Meet in Cariboo

August 8, 2005 for immediate release
The Board of Governors for the University of Northern British Columbia will be visiting the Cariboo region later this month to gather local perspectives on UNBC’s operations and opportunities.
The Board meets five times per year and will be holding a regular meeting in Quesnel, on Friday, August 26. The meeting will begin at 10am in the current CNC/UNBC campus at 488 Maclean Street. The meeting will be held in Room 348.
The Board will also be hosting public panel discussions in Quesnel and Williams Lake to provide local citizens with opportunities to get information about UNBC and provide suggestions for how the University could expand its local services and/or research activity:
Panel Discussions

Quesnel, 7:30pm, August 26, Best Western Tower Inn Banquet Hall
Topic: Reflections on what has happened in education in Quesnel over the past 10 years and the role of a university education in fostering community development.
This year, there were 42 graduates from Quesnel, more than any other community in northern BC outside of Prince George. The group included a cohort of a dozen Bachelor of Social Work grads. UNBC and CNC are currently building a new North Cariboo community campus that is scheduled to open later this year.
Williams Lake, 7:30pm, August 27, The Hearth Restaurant at the Cariboo Friendship Centre
Topic: Weekend University: Past, Present, and Future
This year, four students graduated with UNBC bachelor’s degree from the Weekend University, a program that has made university-level courses available on alternate weekends and in the summer to students from throughout the region. Weekend University is the result of a partnership involving UNBC, the Cariboo Tribal Council, and UCC (now, Thompson Rivers University). UNBC presented an honorary doctoral degree to Mary Alice Danaher this year for her involvement in establishing the program.
The Board of Governors is responsible for the operation and business affairs of the University. Its members include students, faculty, staff, and representation from throughout northern BC. Local members of the Board are Gary Townsend and Antoine Archie.
