UNBC Launches Community Development Speaker Series

Presentations in Prince George and Kitimat This Week
March 14, 2005 for immediate release
A BC leader in rural community development approaches will be visiting Prince George, Terrace, and Kitimat this week. The visit and public presentations are part of a new speaker series being launched by UNBC’s Northern BC Community Development Institute.
“There is a sense of urgency across northern BC around the need for community and economic renewal,” says Greg Halseth, a Canada Research Chair in rural and small-town issues and Acting Director of the Community Development Institute. “This renewal includes more than just economic development. It includes local communities that are building an economy, forging and strengthening social ties, and developing local assets and capacity. Our new speaker series is really aimed at helping to provide information on these issues to northern communities.”
The inaugural presentation will be given by Sean Markey from the Centre for Sustainable Community Development at Simon Fraser University. Dr Markey has experience in community development and economic strategies in both the private and public sector.
