Student Success Week At UNBC
For the second year, the University of Northern British Columbia will be offering an orientation program designed for new students to the University.
Nearly 300 new UNBC students will be participating in Student Success Week, which starts Monday with a general assembly in the Canfor Theatre at 9am. The week-long program will also include workshops on study skills, and presentations from the UNBC Library, the different degree programs, student services, and the fitness centre.
"What we're doing is ensuring that students feel welcome and comfortable with starting university," says Todd Rosie, Orientation Coordinator. "On top of that, we really want to put them into situations that will enhance their opportunities for success academically and socially."
Classes start on Wednesday, September 9th, but the official start of the academic year will be the Presidential Assembly in the Canfor Theatre on Tuesday, September 8th. That event will begin at 10am and will feature a keynote address by Thomas Berger, QC. Mr Berger was previously a lawyer for the Nisga'a in their lawsuit Calder vs BC, and he has headed a number of government inquiries, most notable of which was his Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Inquiry.
Other orientation activities for the week of September 8th to the 11th (for all new and returning students) will include the Northern Backyard BBQ on the 11th, student clubs day, also on the 11th, and a local business trade fair on Thursday, September 10th.
