The Board of Governors for the University of Northern British Columbia held a regular meeting on Saturday. Some highlights:

• The Board approved the spending of the extra $329,000 announced by the Provincial Government in April. At that time, the Government indicated the extra money would be used to increase access by providing advanced practice training for northern nurses, increasing student spaces in Information Technology, and planning for a bachelors degree program in Education. As a result, the Board approved the appointment of two additional professors in Nursing, two additional professors in Computer Science, and the hiring of a Chair of Education to plan for the future implementation of a teacher training program.

• Fees will be increased for International Students and Residence.
  1. International students have paid 1.75 times the tuition fee of a Canadian student; that will now rise to 2.25 times. A full-time international student will now pay just over $5,000 per year for tuition - less than any other BC post-secondary institution.
  2. Residence fees will rise 4% this year; most residence students will now pay $1598 per four-month semester.
