Biography

Dr. Jessie King, Hadiksm Gaax, is Gitxaała Git Lax M’oon, people of the salt water where her family traces her wil’naat’al (matriline) to Lach Klan while also honouring the Irish/Scottish lineage from her Father. Her family belongs to the Ganhada (Raven Clan). Born and raised in Prince Rupert, Jessie moved to Lheidli T’enneh territory in 2005 after schooling in Västerås, Sweden. With a BSc in psychology, MA in First Nations Studies, and PhD in Human and Health Sciences, Jessie’s areas of focus includes Indigenous philosophy(ies), health, Indigenous identities, birth and lifespan knowledge / protocols, and matriarchy. She is a familiar face on campus and an active member of the UNBC community sitting on several committees and serving as Faculty Lead for S.A.G.E. (Supporting Aboriginal Graduate Enhancement. Mother of two young boys and an avid paddler, Jessie is grateful to live, work, play and raise her family on Lheidli T’enneh territories.
