MNRES Degree

The MNRES is an interdisciplinary degree offering students the chance to undertake research that crosses science and social science/humanities boundaries or that is outside the normal scope of the MA or MSc. Students complete either a research based thesis or a project which allows more applied research opportunities.

Program Overview

The structure of our Master degree provides students with an integrated interdisciplinary foundation upon which subsequent, specialized coursework can build.

Required Courses
  • NRES 700-3
  • NRES 701-1
  • NRES 703-3
  • A methods course selected in discussion with your supervisor

These required courses allow students to learn about the philosophy of research and its methods and offer opportunities to learn about each other’s research as well as the mechanics of being a graduate student (developing research proposals, presenting at conferences, etc.).

They will provide students with an informed, integrated base for understanding multi-faceted resource and environmental issues.

NRES 703

This third required course, NRES 703, is taught in a seminar format and challenges students to consider a range of social and scientific perspectives and technical approaches for using and conserving natural resources.

Elective Courses (600 and 700 level)
  • 3 credits for the thesis option
  • 9 credits for the project option

These elective courses provide students with the option to pursue their specialized interests and build expertise in their individual field of study.

Students may take elective courses from other academic units at UNBC or from other universities.

Thesis or Project

The MNRES requires the writing and defense of an independent research thesis (NRES 792-12) or a project report (NRES 793-6).
