About the Program

  • The Northern Transitions Program (NTP) will provide skills and knowledge in this first year of studies that will help you carry on to complete a degree program
  • You will receive credit for courses in which you will develop library skills, text reading skills, communication, exam-taking strategies and quantitative skills.
  • The program is cohort-based so only others in the NTP will be in the courses in order to help build relationships and supports with fellow students.
  • Courses are enhanced by a bi-weekly talking circle with an Academic Learning Coach (ALC) to ensure that all aspects of your student life are nurtured. Focus will be on a wide range of topics from academics and support services to cultural supports and wellness.

Introductory courses in Math, English, Writing, Computer Applications, and University 101

Academic Learning Coach (ALC)
Support networks for personal growth helping students deal with issues that can impede academic success are key in the Northern Transitions Program. The Academic Learning Coach will be your key support in this role. By providing guidance and support for your endeavours, the ALC will guide you through course work in an advisory and supportive capacity. Your Coach will also facilitate bi-weekly talking circles designed to assist you in the transition to university life.

Admission Requirements
Minimum requirements will be the completion of Math 10 or equivalent and preference will be given to those who have completed English 12.
Applicants are asked to submit all transcripts along with a letter of intent. This letter is an opportunity for you to describe yourself, your educational and career goals, and why the Northern Transitions Program will help you achieve these goals.
You also need to submit a letter of support from a high school teacher, Band Administrator, Education Coordinator, sponsoring organization or someone similar who can share more about your suitability for this program.

Tuition & Fees
Students will be expected to pay regular tuition, student fees and associated costs (ie: textbooks, school supplies, etc.). For a list of UNBC tuition fees, please see www.unbc.ca/fees.
Bursaries may be available to students entering the program as well as a number of scholarship opportunities for those who successfully complete the NTP intending to continue programming at UNBC.
