What attracted you to your field?
I am attracted to Family Medicine for many reasons, the most prominent being the ability to form relationships with patients and families and care for them throughout their lives. This became particularly clear to me one day during an elective. In the span of a few hours, I handed a newborn baby to his teary-eyed parents and said goodbye to a well-loved 99 year-old woman. I feel privileged to be present for moments like these.

In 10 years, what UBC or NMP moment will you still be talking about?
My first year attending the Bob Ewert Dinner is a night I will never forget. I had the opportunity to sing with Col. Chris Hadfield. But what was even more amazing, was feeling the support of the Prince George community and learning what they have done for the Northern Medical Program. I felt fortunate and proud to be a part of the NMP, and still do.

What’s next for you?
I am heading to Grande Prairie for a residency in family medicine. I hope to catch many babies, and become a full service rural family physician.

As you look ahead, what (or who) inspires you?
During my final year of medical school, I completed an elective in Maple Ridge with Dr. Ken Burns. He is closer to the end of his career than the beginning. He continues to practice full scope, be innovative, and care deeply for his patients. His most used phrase is “I’m so lucky.” I hope to demonstrate the empathy and positivity that he has throughout my career. Dr. Burns is just one of the many inspiring family physicians I have worked with in BC.
